We love to make scones at our house. I used animal shaped cookie cutters for this batch, but you can make a scone into any shape you wish. Below is the recipe with step by step pictures. We recommend adult supervision while make these scones. I hope you enjoy making them as much as we do.
3 Cups Flour
6 Tabelspoons Unsalted Butter (omit the salt if using salted butter)
1/3 Cups Sugar
1 Teaspoon Salt
2 Teaspoons Baking Soda
4 Teaspoons Cream of Tarter
2 Eggs plus enough Milk to equal a total of 1 Cup of Liquid
Makes about 20 Animal Scones
Bake at 425º for 8 - 9 Minutes
Put all of the dry ingredients with the butter into a food processor (Cuisinart) and mix together well. Next, while the food processor is running, add the 1 cup of liquid ingredients. Remove the dough from the processor and place it on a floured surface. The dough will be quite sticky so you want your hands, the rolling pin and the working surface well floured. Make the dough into a round disk. You can either pat the disk flat or roll it out until it is 1/2" thick. Next, make the scones any shape you would like (animal, circle, triangle, etc.) and put them on a well greased pan. Use a tooth pick to test if the scones are done. When the tooth pick comes out clean and the scones are a light brown color, they are done. Place the scones on a rack to cool. Enjoy!
Using a scale to measure the flour (1 lb of flour is equivalent to about 3 cups.)
Pouring the flour into the food processor
Measuring 3oz of unsalted butter (the equivalent to 6 tablespoons)
Adding the 3oz of sugar (equivalent to 1/3 cup) to the food processor
Measuring out 2 teaspoons baking soda
Eating the cap to the Cream of Tarter instead of measuring out 4 teaspoons.
Cracking 2 eggs into a 1 cup measuring cup.
Adding the milk to the eggs so the liquid equals 1 cup
Liberally flouring the counter top, rolling pin, and hands.
Shaping the dough into a round circle.
Cutting out the scones using an animal cookie cutter.
Ready for the oven!
Bake the scones at 425º for 8 - 9 minutes.
(If using a convection oven bake for 4 - 5 minutes.)
The best part of baking is licking the bowl while the animal scones cook.
The finished product! Enjoy them with butter, jam, and clotted cream. Creme fresh is good with them, too. Don't forget your cup of tea...
